What’s stopping you from achieving your goals?

It’s you.

You are standing in your own way due to procrastination in some form.

Whenever I think of procrastination I think of the fable of the ant and the grasshopper. The ant dutifully worked during his summer while the grasshopper spent his days having fun. When winter came the grasshopper was completely underprepared and had to seek help from the ant. A classic example of procrastionation and its negative effects on our lives. To be honest, the grasshopper was totally relatable. Instead of getting much needed work done we may find ourselves mindlessly scrolling social media. However, this is only one form of procrastination that keeps us from success.

Shifting blame

Instead of taking ownership of your own shortcomings, you may shift the blame to someone or something else. Everyone has shortcomings or weaknesses but someone who is determined is able to work around these in order to succeed. Overcoming this form of procrastination may involve taking notice of what is going wrong and preventing you from succeeding. Try keeping a journal to jot down your progress and your failures. You’ll notice a pattern in particular habits that lead to progress and ones that don’t.

Over-planning

If you find yourself constantly making lists, overwhelmed, or have been criticized with poor follow through then you’re probably over-planning. To overcome this procrastination, make a plan with small goals along the way. And also just go for it. You are probably struggling with a fear of failure and without trying you’re already failing.

Being a perfectionist

Striving for perfection seems like a good thing. Yet, it’s not because perfectionism in anything is impossible. Whatever it may be it will have some sort of flaw and you need to be okay with that. When you’re not, you will find yourself starting and then restarting when it’s not quite perfect. Yes, take pride in your work but also don’t let the unrealistic idea of perfectionism prevent you from completing what you’ve set out to do. To overcome this procrastination, create a list of importance on what needs to have extra attention to areas where you can be more relaxed.

Not thinking outside of the box

Whatever you have set out to accomplish it is highly likely there will be some unexpected occurrences. How you handle these mishaps will determine your success. It requires you to deviate from your initial plan and often times use a creative solution to accomplish your goal. To overcome this procrastination, be aware that plans are rarely perfectly executed. Out of the box thinking may be required. To up your creativity take small breaks from work throughout the day, spend some time outside, and develop hobbies in your free time that inspire a creative lifestyle.
